Local SEO for small businesses: where to start

SEO is the work of getting Google to show you to people who search for what you do. For a local business it is a handful of simple things done properly and for a long time. There is no trick, and nobody can guarantee first place.

1. A page for each service

Someone searching “emergency plumber Prague” wants a page about emergencies, not a general intro. Give each important service (and perhaps town) its own page with a description, an example of the work and a phone number.

2. Google Maps

A business profile is often more important than the website for local search. The steps are in Google Maps for tradespeople.

3. A fast website on mobile

Most searches from a phone end where the page opens immediately. A slow site loses people before it appears. More in mobile-first and page speed.

4. The same details everywhere

Name, phone and e-mail identical on the website, the profile and directories.

5. Links from elsewhere

Links from other sites show Google that someone trusts you. The best are natural: a client's site, a partner, a local association, a directory. Links are not bought, and buying them can hurt.

6. Patience

A new site usually settles in search over weeks to months. Watch Google Search Console for what people search and how often they saw you, and adjust the site accordingly.
